The Liebster Awards

So, a couple of days ago, I was very pleasantly surprised to get a message from the lovely Sara Hardman, nominating me for the Liebster Award – thank you!!

Liebster AwardIf you haven’t heard of the Liebster Award, it is basically an online, chain-letter style blogging award where bloggers nominate other bloggers who they think are awesome/worth checking out/otherwise ‘beloved’, so other people can check them out, too. If sharing is caring, then this is uber love.

The Liebster Award Rules*

(*these seem to change from person to person)

  • You must link back to the person who nominated you.
  • You must answer the 11 questions given by the person who nominated you.
  • You pick 5-11 nominees with under 200 followers to answer your questions.
  • You cannot nominate the person who nominated you.
  • You must tell the nominees that they have been nominated by you.
  • You must provide your nominees with 11 new questions to answer.

So, without further ado:

My Answers

1. Which your favourite city and why?

That’s surprisingly difficult to answer, so I’m going to cheat:

  • Venice because it never fails to feel magical.
  • Florence because it’s small but feels big, and it’s big but it feels small, and it’s significant both historically and personally (see below) and so, so beautiful.
  • New York. Because there’s nothing else like it.
  • Toronto. Because it’s got almost everything.
  • Vancouver. Because it DOES have everything: bearable warm summers, not freezing winters, mountains, beaches, you name it.

2. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever given or received?

My acting coach told us, “Figure out what your world looks like, then reverse engineer yourself into that spot.”

3. Have you ever had a bad travel experience?

My worst travel experience was actually probably feeling so home-sick I could barely get out of bed (twice). I was bed ridden one or two times out of nausea or physical pain, but otherwise, I’ve been pretty lucky. If there’s anything awful that happened, it doesn’t stand out, or I lump it under “adventure.”

4. If you could pick three travel companions, who would they be and why?

Easy.

My brother because even though we’re ten years apart, at times we’re more alike than anyone else I know, and because out of everyone I’ve traveled with, I’ve had the most fun and least drama with him. We just laugh our arses off the whole time.

My boyfriend, because our travel styles and preferences are just different enough that we have experiences we wouldn’t otherwise have without each other.

And my good friend Giacomo, for not only his unfailingly positive mood and good company, but also his wealth of knowledge on pretty much everything.

5. What motivates you to write and to share your experiences through blogging?

I’ve been writing ever since, well, ever since I could. It’s how I learn, it’s how I organize my thoughts, it’s how I share my creativity. Blogging became a no-pressure way to get that creativity out into the world.

6. What makes your blog different?

Stories versus service pieces. Design. Magic. And fun facts ;)

7. What three items could you not travel without?

Assuming appropriate clothing is a given? My Moleskine journal. My Nikon DSLR. And…a hair tie.

8. You’re stuck on a long-haul flight with only an iPod, what are the top three tunes you want to hear?

  • Paradise – Coldplay (or the Gold Dust Paradise DJ Fresh vs Coldplay mix by tH_bAsTeRdS)
  • HariHar – Snatam Kaur (for a change of pace)
  • And then whatever song I happen to be listening to a lot at the time (currently Counting Stars – One Republic)

9. What do you think is the single best way to promote your blog?

Can I be unconventional and answer “consistency”? Otherwise I’d say networking/communicating with your public, and the easiest and quickest way to do that right now seems to be social media, as long as you can manage to not get lost in the noise.

10. What has been the best day of your travel adventures so far?

So many. But since I have to choose: the day I arrived in Florence. It wasn’t my first time there, but it was my first time on my own, and I’d had butterflies in my stomach all day, worried about missing the train, about finding my way, about being alone for the first time.

Then I told myself to shut up – I was in Florence! I found the school I’d be learning Italian in, was shown my apartment, met my awesome roommate, was introduced to more people and was having pizza and wine within hours of getting into the city. More significantly, it was the beginning of one of the most fulfilling and blissful months of my life.

11. What do you miss most when you’re away?

To excerpt from my sixth month update:

I miss silly things like vanilla Activia and flax seed pitas from Costco. I miss intangible things like the familiar sound of the skytrain, my routine, and feeling like I belong. I’ve learned not to miss the proximity to my family, but I miss their energy; I miss their positivity, their insights and their inherent understanding of almost everything I am.
